Mbappe describes PSG as a “divisive team” amid ongoing contract dispute

Paris St Germain (PSG) forward Kylian Mbappe has referred to his club as a “divisive team” as the contract dispute between him and the French champions continues.

Tensions arose last month when Mbappe announced that he would not be renewing his contract, which expires at the end of the next season. This decision means that he could potentially leave PSG for free in June 2024. PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi has stated that they will not allow Mbappe to depart without a transfer fee.

The 22-year-old, who has been Ligue 1’s top scorer for the past five seasons, has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid. In an interview with France Football magazine, Mbappe expressed his frustration with PSG, stating, “I think that playing for PSG doesn’t help much because it’s a divisive team, a divisive club.” However, he did not provide further details regarding his comment.

PSG representatives have not responded to Reuters’ request for comment as of yet.

While PSG has dominated Ligue 1, winning nine of the last eleven titles, Mbappe’s dissatisfaction stems from the club’s performances in the UEFA Champions League. Despite significant investments in the squad, PSG has never won the prestigious European tournament. They were eliminated in the round of 16 this year by Bayern Munich, failing to score in both legs. Mbappe was unavailable due to injury in the first leg and described the team as “helpless” in the second.

Mbappe highlighted his own contributions as the “most decisive player” during the group stage but struggled to explain what PSG was lacking, suggesting that the club has hit a “glass ceiling” in European competitions. He also mentioned that decisions regarding the team, squad organization, and club building should be directed to those in charge.
