Elon Musk plans to remove spam Twitter accounts. This would be a devastating blow for his followers.

CodeClan from the Scottish digital skills academy CodeClan analyzed top-20 most popular accounts on Twitter using Twitter Audit. These included Britney Spears to Barack Obama. The analysis shows that Musk’s total followers would drop to 13.5 million, or around 14 percent, if all fake accounts are removed from Twitter.

Musk agreed to $44 billion or $54.20 each share, this week abandoning his legal fight to take over Twitter. Musk had tried previously to withdraw from the agreement on grounds that Twitter misrepresented the number fake accounts it had filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Although these automated accounts claim to belong to genuine people, they have been set up to promote misinformation or financial frauds.

Musk stated that he would like to reduce the number of spam bots to less than 5%, but claimed back in May it was four times higher. He claimed that spam bots are the “single most irritating problem” on Twitter.

Musk is not the largest loser though, as all fake accounts would be eliminated. Justin Bieber, who has a total number of 114.2 millions followers, would see his following drop to 19.2 million. Britney would be the most affected, losing 48 percent of her 55.8million fans.

Barack Obama would lose 14.6% of his 131.9 Million followers. Katy Perry would lose 21.4 percent of her 108.9M followers.

“We believe that it is vital for bots and spam accounts to be removed from Twitter. Linda Scott, CodeClan’s chief marketing officer, says that spam accounts are causing problems for users, and endangering profiles.

While we understand that the problem goes beyond removing an individual user, it is important to address the issue and establish guidelines.
